SPORT POLICY

Expectations of involvement

The Director of Sport is responsible for the preparation of all sports teams.

The School’s major sporting involvement is with the Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria for boys and the combined Associated Grammar School and Associated Public Schools for girls. As listed on the enrolment agreement, all students must be available if chosen for a School team as either a player or official. All students must be available for the major sporting seasons, which include swimming, athletics, cross country, summer and winter. Opportunities to also be involved in other sporting teams exist, for example snow sports, equestrian, golf and kayaking. Fixtures are most often held on Saturdays, but on occasion where necessary will be held midweek. All students are required to be available for up to two sport practices per week. Sports practices will in most cases conclude by 5.00pm.

Students representing the School in sporting fixtures are expected to wear the correct team/sport uniform. While travelling to sporting fixtures students are to wear their school uniform or the parka jacket and Yarra Valley tracksuit pants or the correct sports gear for the sport they are playing. Students are required to change at lunchtime for sport practices that commence during period five sport. Students are required to change at the end of the day for practices that commence after school. Any student wishing to alight from a bus during a return journey form a sports practice or fixture will only be permitted to do so if the bus driver is willing and able to stop, and if the student has a note from a parent or guardian giving permission for such an arrangement.

The procedures set out below are done so to allow the smooth operation of a large sporting program. Students who fail to follow the sport procedures will receive a sanction.

Exemptions from Sport – Period 5

Students who are not able to participate in period five sport require a MASH pass.

Students are to provide a written note and give it to the Director of Sport before the end of lunch on the day the exemption is required.

Students will be issued with a MASH pass and are required to give the pass to the teacher in charge of MASH on arrival at 2.30pm sharp.
Go to the MASH room on time and with reading material. Students unable to participate will not attend sport practice, they must go to the MASH room.

NB: On very rare occasions it may be that a student was not able to locate the Director of Sport.
Follow the same procedure with your Year Level Co-ordinator.

Exemption from after school training

Provide a written note / preferably a day or two before the actual day the exemption is required. Give it to the Director of Sport before the end of recess on the day the exemption is required.

Unless medically incapable, a student may be required to attend after school sports practice even though they can not participate. This would in the most part be related to the student meeting with a coach who is not a teacher at the school.

NB: If a student forgets their sports gear they are expected to attend after school practice an assist the team with set up and pack up etc.

Unwell at school and not able to attend sport on that day

Report to the Health Centre. The School Nurse will contact the Director of Sport to inform them of your state of health.
Do NOT just go home without communicating your situation to the Health Centre or you will receive a sanction.

Exemption from Saturday sport fixture

It is the School’s responsibility to field full teams in all AGSV / APS fixtures entered. In order to guarantee this the Head of School will not grant exemptions unless team numbers are secure. Provide a written note to the Head of School by the Monday recess of the week preceding the weekend fixture you are looking for exemption from. (Five days notice for obvious reasons).
If exemption is required on medical grounds for one round of sport a written note is required.
If exemption is required on medical grounds for more than one round of sport a medical certificate is to be provided. If a student falls ill on Friday, is not in attendance at school
and is unlikely to recover by the Saturday sporting fixture, please phone the Director of Sport at the School on the Friday. If a student falls ill over night please phone the School Saturday morning sports number, 0409 413 009 to communicate the situation. This allows
the Director of Sport to communicate with those concerned so where possible, alternative arrangements can be made.

Information regarding Saturday sport fixtures

Students have access to the latest information via their fixtures, the Sports Noticeboard
and the Director of Sport. Should any further information be required on the Saturday
morning regarding adjustments to published fixtures or wet weather / cancellations, please
call 9262 7888.

Unwell on the morning of a scheduled fixture:

  1. Ring 0409 413 009 after, but as close to 6.45am as possible. This call will most likely be answered by someone who can take the details and follow up directly with the sports staff and coaches. If the call does go to message bank please leave the following details very clearly:

    – Team and year level

    – Coach

    – Venue of the fixture
  2. The student is to provide a written note to the Director of Sport on returning to School.

NB: non attendance at a sporting fixture, or lack of appropriate communication is a very serious matter and will most probably result in a sanction.
