SUN PROTECTION POLICY
General StatementThe School aims to educate the students about the need to protect themselves from the harmful effects of the sun as part of a life long process and to assist them to reduce the risk of sun damage. A sun protection policy, which makes statements about the responsibilities of staff and students in general, and makes specific statements about the wearing of hats and the use of sunscreens, has been developed by the School. The policy appears in student diaries and within school information booklets. RulesWhere it is stated that a particular item must be worn, students must abide by the statement. Where a particular practice is recommended, the School takes the view that the student should follow the recommendation. CLOTHING PROTECTIONSenior School
- Senior School students are ENCOURAGED to wear hats that shade the head, neck and ears during breaks in Terms 1 and 4.
- All Senior School students are expected to wear the black school cap during outside Physical Education classes and House sport in Terms 1 and 4.
- Note: The black school cap is only to be worn for Physical Education classes, House sport and during breaks. It is NOT to be worn for inter-school sporting activities or when the student is representing the School in any activity unless specified.
- Any student engaged in outdoor summer inter-school sport is expected to wear the specified school hat/cap:
- Greg Chappell style school hat for cricket.
- First XI Cricket cap.
- Black school cap for tennis and softball or Greg Chappell style hat for tennis.
- Either the black school cap or Greg Chappell style hat for any other outside summer sporting activity.
- A school street hat is available in a choice of two styles for wearing with the school uniform.
- Students are ENCOURAGED to wear protective sunglasses, which have approved filtering characteristics, at times of prolonged exposure to the sun, for example, during long breaks in the school day when not involved in active play and during appropriate sport and PE sessions. They may also be worn on outdoor excursions and during some camping activities.
- It is strongly recommended that students wear the Yarra Valley Grammar lycra suntop when swimming.
- The School encourages students to use a broad spectrum water resistant SPF30+ SUNSCREEN.
Junior School
- The wearing of hats outdoors is compulsory during Terms 1 and 4. Style of hat:
- ELC Hats of own choice.
- P – 2 Slouch hat.
- 3 – 6 A choice of Greg Chappell style with broad brim or slouch hat with Yarra Valley monogram.
