This past weekend Yarra Valley Grammar’s Big Band travelled to Mount Gambier in South Australia to take part in the 20th annual Generations in Jazz festival, which incorporated the National Stage Band Awards. It was an opportunity for our students to not only compete with and hear some of the best school jazz ensembles from all around Australia, but also to hear some of the finest professional musicians in the country do their thing in several concerts, including the incomparable James Morrison.
The students performed their 3-song set in the Stage Band awards on Saturday morning and performed brilliantly. The played exceptionally musically and represented the school with distinction. They were adjudicated by renowned American trombonist Bill Broughton.
After a weekend of fantastic music and inspiration, The YVG Big Band was awarded
first place in their division, which is a sensational result for our musicians. They returned to school Sunday evening buzzing and satisfied with a great achievement and a weekend of musical inspiration.
You can hear the YVG Big Band in full flight early next term at
Jazz in the Café on Saturday August 1 – put it in your diaries!
