SUCCESS BUILDS ON SCHOOL’S SPIRIT

Yarra Valley Grammar principal Mark Merry at his commissioning on May 19The first thing new Yarra Valley Grammar principal Mark Merry noticed on his first day was the interaction between his students. ‘‘The thing that struck me was how they get on so well together,’’ Dr Merry said. ‘‘This extended to their relationship with the staff as well, so it makes for a positive day for the kids.’’ Dr Merry should know what he is talking about. After all, the 46-year-old Warranwood resident has a PhD in Education for his studies on the correlation between school culture and academic performance.

He spent eight years as principal at Bulleen’s Marcellin College before moving to Yarra Valley on April 6. ‘‘I knew of Yarra Valley though the grammar school association and because we had played sport against them,’’ he said. ‘‘I knew of their outstanding reputation, plus it is only a few minutes drive from home which helps.’’ Dr Merry said the change from a boys school to coeducation had ‘‘made things interesting’’.

But he said he was attending as many school functions as possible to become more familiar with his new school. ‘‘I have noticed there are great opportunities at this school whether it is in arts, sports or academically,’’ he said. ‘‘I want to ensure that students here continue to be challenged and supported to reach their academic potential.
