COMMUNITY LINKS

community-links-3AT YARRA VALLEY GRAMMAR WE AIM TO DEVELOP OUR STUDENTS’ LIFE SKILLS AS WELL AS NURTURE THEIR ACADEMIC, SPORTING AND CULTURAL TALENTS.

To achieve your personal best means understanding all aspects of life, both within and beyond the School gates.

Being happy, well-adjusted and resilient to life’s ups and downs comes from real life experience. Facilitating that experience at Yarra Valley is Community Links – our social service program.

A Community Links Committee is composed of students and staff from all parts of the School. Students from all year levels are encouraged to participate and organise a range of social service and fundraising activities throughout the year.

The program encourages responses from the whole of the Junior School, Middle School and Senior College, as well as the opportunity for individual home room and tutorial groups to plan activities to help particular community groups. The students own these activities by planning and executing their ideas themselves, with minimal support and guidance from teachers.

Understanding the role that we all play in our local and global communities heightens awareness of others’ needs and aligns to our objectives of developing well-rounded, caring and ‘life smart’ young adults.

Recent and ongoing examples of Community Links activities include:

  • Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal – students volunteer to door knock with the Pied Pipers
  • Red Nose Day – selling merchandise to raise money for SIDS and Kids
  • Casual clothes day – to raise funds for Anglicare
  • Hearing Awareness Week – casual clothes day and other activities to raise money for and awareness of the Bionic Ear Institute
  • Jeans for Genes Day – ‘jeans' casual clothes day to raise funds for the Children's Medical Research Institute
  • Daffodil Day – selling merchandise to raise funds for The Cancer Council Victoria

In addition, each year level organises its own charitable activities to raise funds for a charity of their choice.
