Careers

An important part of our new engagement strategy is providing careers advice to Yarra’s senior students. A couple of events under this portfolio that have happened recently include:

Tertiary Conversations That Count: 31 August 2022

Patrick, Tiffany, Aijah and Zac, all YOGs from the Class of 2021, were delighted to join YVG Year 12 students for Tertiary Conversations That Count a couple of weeks ago. The YOGs shared their tertiary experience with the students and gave them an insight into what life post-Yarra might look like for them.

YOG Uni Catch Ups: 12-21 September 2022

A new initiative last year, that was disrupted due to COVID, YOG Uni Catch Ups, has gone ahead with full steam this year. Young YOGs studying at university have volunteered to meet up with some of Yarra’s Year 11 and 12 students to show them around their uni campus and talk through the differences between life @ Yarra and life @ uni!

The feedback from the students participating has been incredibly positive. We will continue to evolve this program and watch out for exciting new developments for this program for next year.

It is sensational to have our younger YOGs contributing back to our current students in these ways.

Career Bytes: Anytime!

If you are further on in your career journey, as a YOG we’d love your participation in our new careers initiative, Career Bytes. Aimed primarily at our Year 9 students, they are simply career ‘stories’ to help guide the students through their subject choice and future pathway decisions.

Yarra students (and younger YOGs) can search for Career Bytes based on various parameters including industry, occupation, tertiary institution, tertiary course or Y12 subject studied. They can be 1-2 minute videos or simply a form filled out with your journey details.

We encourage you to share your career story to help current students to navigate theirs. To have a look at an example of a Career Byte, please go HERE and to submit your Career Byte please go HERE.

Speed Careering: 1 March 2023

A mainstay in the YOG Careers calendar has become YOG Speed Careering. This involves YOGs talking to small groups of Year 10 and 12 students about their journey since Yarra and inspiring them on what their future could look like.

In 2023, it’s 7th year, it will be on the morning of Wednesday 1 March from 8.30am until approx. 11am. Please email us (yog@yvg.vic.edu.au) if you have not been involved before and would like to find out more.
