Sian Gooden

YOG 2002

Business Development Manager, Industry Engagement, RMIT University

“I was encouraged by the School community to explore every interest – sporting, academic or otherwise”

Yarra Old Grammarian, Sian Gooden, class of 2002, remembers being encouraged to explore every interest while at school. After graduating, Sian took the advice of her Year 11 Accounting teacher (her father) and studied a double degree in Media Communications and Commerce.

During her studies, Sian travelled to Vancouver for a semester of exchange, volunteered in Costa Rica, explored South East Asia and road tripped through New Zealand and California.

Volunteering has been a constant since Sian’s university years. “During my studies, I mentored recently arrived refugees, worked with adults and children with disabilities, coordinated hearings to explore the condition of Australia’s detention centres and ran over ten fundraising gigs for various causes.”

Sian now enjoys serving on the Board of Cambodian Kids Can and has launched a blog (www.50faces.com.au) to share the stories of people in her life helping others through their work.

Among her proudest personal achievements are riding 800km across Thailand in eight days (twice) to raise money for at risk Thai children, running 94km through central Australia to raise money for indigenous literacy programs and completing Oxfam’s 100km Trailwalker seven times.

Sian’s professional career has spanned the consulting, not for profit and tertiary education sectors.  In her role at RMIT University, she now uses her expertise to build strategic industry partnerships that cultivate opportunities for students and academics.

Sian remains close to many of her friends from Yarra and reflects on her school years fondly “My tendency to burn the candle at both ends stems from my days at Yarra that were filled with study, summer and winter sport, debating and many lunchtimes spent laughing with friends in the locker room”.

Sian’s drive and determination show how much can be achieved by our Old Grammarians in wherever their passions take them.
