en-us Inspired by Yarra

Daniella Sorace

YOG 2004

Group Account Director, Kate & Co. PR

“I was inspired by the opportunities and networks at Yarra.”

Dani Sorace has spent her working life in public relations and event management. No two days are the same, which is exactly how Dani likes it.

She has worked with clients including Myer, Lexus and Penfolds and has been on the ground at a range of major events including the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Melbourne Fashion Week and the races in Sydney.

“There is no set routine to the madness of PR and the events world. In any week I might pitch to media to secure publicity, style photo shoots, manage event guest lists and support the team of 10 publicists that I lead,” she says.

Dani joined Yarra in Year 9 and threw herself into the activities on offer.

“I was quite introverted but I was heavily involved with the musicals. I played a lead role in one performance and I remember the spotlights coming on and looking at the full auditorium – a daunting moment. But it was a phenomenal experience and theatre helped me be the person I am today.”

As well as being involved in drama and musical productions, Dani balanced her creativity with her sporting talents. She played volleyball and basketball.

“I loved Saturday morning sport although my poor parents had to run me here, there and everywhere! I liked the fast pace and competitiveness, being part of a team – and winning some games now and then.”

While she was at Yarra, Dani was interested in becoming a commercial airline pilot and she juggled homework and exams with studying to get her pilot’s licence. She was legally able to fly a plane before she could drive a car.

Dani enjoyed flying for pleasure but decided she didn’t want to pursue a career in aviation and so eventually ended up in PR. She has worked her way into increasingly senior roles through hard work and being willing to continually learn new skills.

“My parents have a brilliant work ethic and instilled that in my sister and I. If I set something in my mind, I need to achieve it. I think it’s also important to surround yourself with like-minded people who will help and guide you on your journey,” she says.

Yarra’s motto also remains with Dani.

“To me that motto is about being open minded and having kindness always. Know what you are looking at but look beyond to see if there is something else you can bring to life.”
